What to Do If Your Computer Is Running Slow: A Quick Fix Guide

A slow computer can be frustrating – and it can cost your business time and productivity.
Before calling IT support, here are a few simple checks you can try.

1. Restart Your Computer

It sounds simple, but restarting clears temporary files and resets processes

2. Close Unused Programs

Too many open apps can slow everything down. Check:
  • Browser tabs
  • Background apps
  • Startup programs

3. Check For Updates

Outdated software can cause performance issues. Update:
  • Windows or macOS
  • Browsers
  • Office apps
  • Security software
  • Firmware

4. Run a Malware Scan

Malware can slow your system dramatically. Use:
  • Malwarebytes
  • Microsoft Defender
  • Antivirus or Endpoint Protection

5. Check Your Storage Space

If your hard drive is nearly full, your computer will slow down. Aim to keep at least 20% free space.

6. Restart Your Router (If Internet Feels Slow)

Sometimes the issue isn’t your computer, it’s your connection.
